The first step is making sure the cigarette is completely extinguished. A lit cigarette should never be thrown directly onto the ground, into plants, or into trash bins without being put out first, as it can easily start fires. Smokers can gently press the cigarette against an ashtray or a nonflammable surface until the ember is no longer burning.
After extinguishing it, the cigarette butt should be placed in a proper trash bin or ashtray. If no ashtray is available, carrying a portable ashtray can help prevent littering in public spaces. Portable ashtrays are small, reusable, and commonly used in many countries to reduce cigarette waste on streets and sidewalks.
Another important step is avoiding the habit of tossing cigarette butts into drains or bodies of water. Rain can carry these small pieces of waste into rivers and oceans, where they break down into microplastics and release toxic chemicals harmful to marine life and ecosystems.
Proper cigarette disposal may seem like a small action, but small actions become meaningful when practiced consistently. Taking a few extra seconds to dispose of a cigarette responsibly helps keep public spaces cleaner and protects the environment from unnecessary pollution.
